Game ideas I can’t make

I have a lot of ideas for games that I either want to make or that I’ve tried to make in the past. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, I can’t feasibly make them on my own. Nonetheless, they’re still ideas I have and I want to get them out there. Maybe they’ll seem cool to you.

First Responder: The Game

That is…exactly what it sounds like. I’m a really big fan of a TV show called 9-1-1, and its spin-off, 9-1-1: Lone Star. They’re shows where each episode is a series of 911 calls and the series follows the lives of first-responders as they respond to these calls.

When I started watching this show, I started having this thought in the back of my head that I’d like to play a game about this – but I’m not aware of any that exist. To be clear, I know that there are games on Steam like 911 Operator, and while it’s a really great real-time strategy game about being a 911 operator, you don’t actually get to go out on a call.

I could imagine a game where you choose to either play as the police, fire fighters, or paramedics. You are in charge of your team, and you need to respond to each call as quickly as you can, and run your team as efficiently as you can – such that there are no casualties, lost or escaped criminals, etc.

Or, you know, because it’s a video game, you could always just pull an act of complete irony, go rogue, and start running over pedestrians with an ambulance as it goes lights and sirens for no reason. But then you’d get fired…or arrested.

Codeflow but Gamified

There’s an extension for Visual Studio Code called codeflow. When enabled, it takes control of your computer’s volume and adjusts it based on how fast you type in the code editor. The idea is that you put on your favourite programming music, turn codeflow on, and it increases the volume gradually as you program more quickly – to encourage you to keep up the flow.

The problem with this extension is that there’s nothing stopping you from just spamming the keyboard with random keypresses, and there’s no way for the extension for you to know that what you’re writing actually makes sense. This means that you may be typing fast and feeling the flow, but there’s just a bunch of uncompileable garbage flowing out of your head. Not handy at all.

Instead, hear me out.

You play as a programmer as you advance through your career. The game is organized into a bunch of missions, where each mission is a task that you have to complete in your job as a programmer. Each mission gets harder because the code you have to write gets longer and more complex.

But here’s the mechanic. Instead of having to think of what code you need to write, the game tells you what you need to type – think of it as if your character is thinking of what he needs to do, but you’re just his hands doing the typing.

Each mission has a specific music track associated with it, that plays in the background as you write code. You complete the mission by finishing the programming task before the song ends. You earn points by typing to the rhythm of the song, and lose points by making typos.

Really, this is just a gameified typing tutor mixed with a rhythm game, but I think it’s really interesting. Extra difficulty could be added by forcing the player to use vim keybinds. Because vim is hard.

Discord Server Tycoon

This is a more 2020-relevant version of an idea I had several years ago for a tycoon game. The only difference is that idea involved running a phpBB forum. And nobody uses those.

Basically the idea is that you play as a brand new Discord community admin. You create your first ever Discord server and your goal is to end up with the most active, popular Discord server out there.

So, that means making your server attractive to people, growing your moderation team to handle bad eggs in the community, finding or creating Discord bots for people to enjoy, responding to community feedback, etc. The big challenge is to not create a toxic community, or one that’s a hub for illegal activity, or otherwise a community that would break ToS and get you kicked off the platform.
